you’re deep into this Foursquare business

Not everyone can attend E3 and ask us their TERA questions, so we’re bringing E3 to you via Twitter! At 10:30 AM Pacific Time on Wednesday, June 16, anyone can ask Senior Producer Brian Knox questions about the game through our Twitter account @ kcq.com. Start practicing your 140-character questions!

If you’re like us, you’re deep into this Foursquare business (and if you’re not, it’s easy to sign up). We’ll have a check-in for our E3 booth—and a special bag 'o swag for whomever holds the title of "Mayor" of our booth a half-hour before the show floor closes on Thursday, June 17. En Masse employees are not eligible to win, so don’t worry about us sniping it from you.

We got a good deal of feedback on in-game voice chat as well. No huge surprise: voice chat is very important to TERA players. We polled focus group testers about third-party voice chat vendors, and they almost unanimously indicated that an in-game solution would be best, provided it outperforms currently available third-party voice chat solutions.

the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires

The Wheel of Velik, a 500-foot gear in the center of the city, marks the passage of time just as it did when the goddess Velik set it into motion 500 years ago. The central wheel provides magical power throughout the city, fueling much of Velika's industry. The city is also famous for its statuary, especially the many falcons considered sacred to Velik's followers and the 100-foot-tall statue of the goddess herself in full huntress regalia.
Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries. When the age of human wanderings came to an end, they sought a place not already claimed by another nation or race.
Meanwhile, the hunter goddess Velik, weary after the Divine War among the gods, built a palace on the plains of southern Arun. She then proclaimed “an end to games of war and plunder” within sight of the falcons that roosted outside her windows, entered her palace, and closed the gates behind her.
Attracted by the notion of a peace enforced by a goddess, human clans began to congregate around Velik's palace. Within a century, a rudimentary city grew to surround it. First in disguise, and later in her true form, Velik began to walk the streets of the city, aiding in its construction and eventually creating the Wheel of Velik that still turns today.

Three towering gates offer access to the city’s broad avenues

Three towering gates offer access to the city’s broad avenues from the blistering desert outside the walls, and on a fourth “corner” the Mysterium maintains two areas for pegasus travelers from across the continents. Based on only the friendly smiles and open arms, one might never guess that not so very long ago, non-elven visitors could expect a very different—and much more violent—reception.

Kings have control over taxes and they will be able to choose the balance of how monsters spawn in the world. For example, if the King chooses to have less monsters spawn in the lower level areas of the world, more will have to spawn in the higher level areas. This means that the King will have to be very in touch with the community.

Having seen firsthand the types of tech-support problem

We’ll also give players no-fee character transfers between game worlds for the first several months until the crowding situation stabilizes. If the game world where you and your friends would like to play is overcrowded, you can switch to a less busy one for the evening’s gaming session. When things settle down post-launch, you and your friends may then transfer your characters back to your preferred game world—again, for no fee—so you can play with your guildmates and larger circle of friends.

In-game GMs aren’t as efficient at solving problems as GMs that have full-screen, dedicated support tools to detect and correct problems. We will have customer service agents available 24/7 for all support issues: game, tech, billing, and chat. Players will be able to get in touch with our support team using whatever method they’d like—by phone, Web-based chat, Web-based support email, and in-game reports—so we believe players' problems will be dealt with expeditiously.

Having seen firsthand the types of tech-support problems that intrusive, client-based, anti-hacking technologies like GameGuard cause, there’s no way we’re going to cause that kind of grief for TERA players. The top hackers in the world know how to bypass anything that’s done by the game client, so we don’t believe that this is the right approach.

We anticipate that TERA will receive a mature game-rating, but that doesn’t mean that harassment and chat abuse are tolerable behaviors—games receive their ratings based on content, not because there are too many ass-hats in the game. Virtually every MMO has a problem with chat spam and chat griefing, but just because the problem exists elsewhere doesn’t mean that we can leave it at that.

En Masse will make a special presentation of new

We have a military escort. Not exactly a color guard--I have more teeth than any three of them. And their horses are hide and bones. I strike up a conversation with the sergeant. It turns out that our "escort" is actually a bunch of teamsters, not actual soldiers. All the real soldiers are off at the Argon front, the sergeant explains. "But the appearance of soldiers may scare off bandits." Wait..."may?"
At least these guys know the road. Our first day passes without incident. Lots of quiet farmhouses and silent hamlets. Abandoned, perhaps? Drinks around the evening fire. I listen as teamsters and diggers one-up each other with increasingly unlikely "worst job ever" stories.
Join us on Thursday, July 22nd, the first evening of Comic-Con, as En Masse hosts a party at 923 Bar & Lounge from 7pm to 9pm Pacific time. This is an invite-only event to which all members of the TERA community are invited! We will also hand out invitations to visitors at our Comic-Con booth. If you are either attending Comic-Con or are in the area, simply reply to this forum thread to RSVP for the event! We apologize, but no one under the age of 18 will be permitted, and the venue is limited to only 100 guests.
During the event, En Masse will make a special presentation of new, exclusive information about the game. Guests will also have the chance to win TERA prizes and mingle with En Masse Entertainment staff over drinks and appetizers. Video of the event and our presence at our booth in Comic-Con will be produced and made available after the convention ends.

Along the eastern coast of Arun

The thirteenth installment of Screenshots of the Week complements our recent additions to the official TERA website's interactive world map: the cities of Velika and Castanica. Capitals of the human and castanic races, respectively, these cities may be situated on the same continent but their similarities end there.
Along the eastern coast of Arun, Castanica is cloaked in darkness and hidden by tall jagged rocks. Bright crimson displays attached to angular architecture fill its narrow streets. To the southwest lies Velika, the red tile roofs of its stone buildings dwarfed by the towering Wheel of Velik, an azure beacon visible from neighboring fields and pastures.
The human city of Velika dominates the southern half of Arun, serving as the political, economic, and cultural center for the Valkyon Federation. Though it's far from the battles of the Argon front, the war against the Argons is always on the minds of Velikan citizens. Velika's architecture may be as stunning as ever, but rationing, shortages, and crime provide a dark side to life in the City of Wheels.
Though tempered by wartime concerns, the boundless vitality of the city is infectious. Many who visit Velika find it hard to return to the logging towns and farming villages of southern Arun.
The Wheel of Velik, a 500-foot gear in the center of the city, marks the passage of time just as it did when the goddess Velik set it into motion 500 years ago. The central wheel provides magical power throughout the city, fueling much of Velika's industry.
